- Cheney Duvall: Cheney is the main character of this series. Twenty-four years old, she is one of the first female doctors back in a time when women did not take on roles that were traditionally male. She is a very strong character but has a lot of growing up to do since she comes from a very sheltered, wealthy background.
- Shiloh Irons: Shiloh is Cheney's male nurse. Shiloh is an orphan and used to be a very successful boxer. He fought in the civil war and has seen more than his fair share of violence. He has a bad temper but is also very caring and protective of those weaker than him.
