Part one in this two-book series, "Shanghai Girls", was not my favorite, or the most impressive, book ever. I did go into this book with that bias, and at the same time I did want to see what was going to happen (a familiar feeling, I'm sure). See pleasantly surprised me with this one, exceeding my expectations, which I have to admit were not very high. But this books blossoms. It is part clearly excellently researched historical fiction (about a time period about which I know next to nothing, the beginnings of communist China) and part bittersweet, heartwarming story about family love, family bonds, patriotism (in both negative and positive aspects of that word), belonging, and finding one's self. I must say, highly recommended.
