From the ancient Greeks, through the time of Leonardo da Vinci, to the steam pioneers of the late eighteenth century, it had been the impossible dream of man to improve on the energies whipped out of a horse, ox, steer, or other beast of burden and by mechanical means to provide transport that either utilized forces in natural state, or a fuel that, when brought under control, would furnish a fleeter chariot than the next.
