When Philip Jettan declares his love to Cleone, she is thrilled and appalled at the same time. She will not consent to his proposal until he polishes his manners and obtains and aire of grace and extravagance. Hurt; Philip goes to Paris, the capital of fashion, manners and extravaganza to redeem himself in the eyes of is one and only love, Cleone. Only, when he returns back to England, he is changed, and Cleone thinks he is nothing but a painted puppet, or is he?

Didn't finish because I thought it was a bit too silly. I've heard Georgette Heyer compared to Jane Austen, but it's not a comparison I would venture to make.
