Sir Gareth Ludlow knows it is his duty as a man of honour to restore so young and pretty a girl as Amanda, wandering unattended, to her family. But it is to prove no easy task for the Corinthian.

- Sir Gareth Ludlow: Respectable member of the ton; fashionable and well-liked. Needs to marry; is visiting Hester, an old friend, to ask her to marry him.
- Amanda: Heroine. Sixteen years old. Headstrong, wilful and creative. Runs away from her grandfather because he will not consent to her marrying her Brigade-Major. Runs into Gareth who is determined to locate her grandfather. Invents dozens of false stories to try and throw Gareth off and has a tendency to run away.
- Hildebrand Ross: Young man at Cambridge on his way to meet friends to go on a walking tour of Wales when he meets Amanda and Sir Gareth at an inn.
- Lady Hester Theale: Not quite thirty-years old but her family despairs of her ever marrying. Lives with her brother and his wife. Leads a dull, respectable life.
