• Theodore Frant: 6th Earl's nephew, 29 years old. manages estate when 7th Earl (Gervase) was still in England
• Lady St. Erth: Gervaise's stepmother, the dowager countess.
• Miss Drusilla Morville: visiting at Stanyon while her parents are visiting the lakes
• Marianne Bolderwood: The Baron's daughter, a very beautiful young woman looking forward to her come-out in London, Marianne lives at the near-by estate of Whissenhurst
• Sir Thomas Bolderwood: Marianne's father, a baron and resident of Whissenhurt near Stanyon. "A stout little man, with a shrewd pair of eyes... he was clearly a person of affluence, if not taste." Made his fortune in India.
