But people need to know that mental illness can be hereditary, and that it needs to be dealt with, not covered up.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Overall this was an enjoyable read. It is a sad story with many heartwrenching moments, and some disturbing family secrets, but there is an element of hope to over come them if you are looking for it.”

Told from the perspective of innocent Bethany, the goings-on of people around her are sometimes a puzzle, but she is intelligent enough to know that all is not right. Her cousin Reana Mae and her sister Tracy complicate her life , and they, each others. The end is a tragic circumstance that changes all their lives. Contrasts two cultures in the family, and secrets long hidden, plus the results of those secrets. ”

Bethany is the narrator. Reana Mae survives abandonment and dysfunction, and they both survive mental illness in the family. There is also incest and lots of other dysfunctional family issues. It isn't all bad though - there are some very strong female characters who really help Bethany and Reana Mae make it through.
5 stars!”
“What a great read. There are issues in this book that people can relate to and others that are extremely shocking. Telling the story through the voice of Bethanyis great because the narration keeps the story simple when it really is not. This story took place in the 70's, which I also enjoyed because that is the era when I grew up. I kept comparing my live in suburban Philadelphia to Reana and Bethany's life in the West Virginia River Vally and Indianapolis. I love how Belle tied the loose ends together at the end.”
