    Geling Yan's novel is an enjoyable if disconcerting read. It unveils a country hungry not only for food, but also for status and immediate westernisation. The story works very well as a metaphor for present day China: the huge, lavish banquets are enjoyed by a corrupt oligarchy but are also 'bugged' by ordinary citizens eager to join the 'progress' bandwagon.
