Overweight teen, Esme, fed up with being endlessly tormented by three sinister bullies is willing to risk almost anything, including her soul, to become thin and popular. Overhearing a conversation about a Dr. Goulash and his Midnight Diet Club, she believes she has stumbled on the secret to popularity, but the risks are many and dangerous. She must confront the bullies and attempt to blackmail them into accepting her into their club. Furious their secret may be revealed, but powerless to find where Esme has hidden secret letters, her insurance that she will not be attacked, Alexa, Latisha and Pam pretend to accept her into their club which meets at midnight in the No Return Cemetery. Believing the cemetery and ghoulish vampire girls in the club are meant to frighten her off, Esme refuses to be frightened until she is faced by the terrifying Ignor Amos, the gigantic bodyguard who blocks the door. Expecting the leader of the club to be even more menacing, she is relieved and surprised to finally meet the jovial and clown-like Dr. Ghoulash, never suspecting this so-called genius and his miraculous diet are designed to trick eager young girls into a life of service to the disguised, evil, vampire king.
Esme must weigh the price of popularity when her only friend is captured by the vampires. Her hunger for popularity and acceptance, her need for blood, threaten her conscience and soul. In a final battle, Esme learns the true secret that can defeat vampires and bullies.
Kids love reading about vampires so the vampires in this book are used to teach about the devastating effects of bullying and suggest ways to defeat them. While some parts are 'slightly scary', most of the book and characters are humorous such as Dr. Ghoulash, the lead vampire. As a teacher and children's author I take my responsibilities very seriously and hope the educational lessons in this book will help your children learn about the vital topic of bullying while they enjoy this twist on vampire stories.
