• Lee Barker: Madeline's father. Reverend Lee Barker was a local hero and virtual saint until his disappearance almost twenty years ago. His first wife killed herself and his second wife, Irene, was the mother of Clay, Grace and Molly. He was with Irene for three years before his disappearance.
• Allie Montgomery: Madeline's sister-in-law who is married to her step-brother Clay. Allie has a daughter for her first marriage by the name of Whitney. Allie was formally a police officer in Chicago specializing in cold cases. Allie is actually a native of Stillwater and moved back after her first marriage fell apart.
• Kirk: Madeline's ex-boyfriend. Madeline and Kirk had been together for five years but had always been more best friends that really boyfriend and girlfriend.
• Irene Montgomery: Madeline's step-mother. Irene is mother to Clay, Grace and Molly and she cares deeply for Madeline. Irene was 16 when she had her first child and never finished high school. She was married to Lee Barker for three years before his disappearance. She has never been well received in Stillwater and has virtually no friends. Irene has a flamboyant personality and favors big hair and colorful, tight-fitting clothes.
• Clay Montgomery: Madeline's brother. Clay and Madeline are roughly the same age. Clay is very protective of his family, including Madeline. He is considered a mysterious and intimidating man and many of the townsfolk blame him for the disappearance of Lee Barker.
• Katie Swanson: A young Stillwater resident who died from a hit and run before the Montgomery's lived there.
• Mike Metzger: A local trouble maker who Madeline has long suspected for having something to do for the disappearance of her father, Lee Barker. Due to her Madeline's interest in him the police discovered a Meth Lab he had built and he was sent to jail. Mike holds a grudge against Madeline for this.
• Antoinette: Hunter's ex-wife. Antoinette and Hunter were married for 12 years. Their marriage was never a happy one and she has been manipulating Hunter for extra money by using his guilt over the divorce and his daughter.
• Rose Lee: A young Stillwater resident who died by overdose before the Montgomery's lived there.
• Ray Harper: An old friend of Lee Barker's. Ray is the local Handy Man for Stillwater. He was father to Rose Lee.
• Molly Montgomery: Madeline's youngest step-sister. Molly moved away from Stillwater right after graduating High School and currently lives in New York City. Molly visits Stillwater a few times a year but never stays for very long. Madeline believes this is because Molly fears she will become stuck and will never be able to get away again.
• Eliza Barker: Eliza is Madeline's birth mother. For years Eliza struggled with depression and had seemed of the verge of leaving her husband when she instead was found dead by Madeline of an apparent suicide. Eliza wrote a lot but tended to burn a lot of her writing. Much of what is left is very dark poems.
• Maria: Hunter's 12 year old daughter. She currently lives in California with her mother.
• Kennedy Archer: Kennedy is from a very prominent family in town. He grew up in Stillwater and was always very popular. He married his high school girlfriend and had two children (Heath and Tobby.) They were happily married until his wife died in a car crash. A couple years later he and Grace connected and they married. They are currently new parents of a little girl.
• Whitney: Allie's daughter from her first marriage.
