Tunnels was a great read. It had a little bit of everything: a cool heroine, scared kids on a college campus, and a serial murder who lured victims into the tunnels beneath the campus and ritualistically murdered them. Kelly Jones is the FBI agent who is tracking down the sadistic killer. Kelly, along with her partner , Morrow, & a rogue former FBI agent, Jake, work tirelessly to find out how the crimes are committed. Some Viiking history plays a part and there is also the tension between Kelly and Jake which keeps the story flowing. The ending is pure terror when Kelly risks her life to find the answer.

Too much gore for my taste in a mystery and suspense thriller.

This is a fabulous new thriller by Michelle Gagnon. It has the elements of horror and suspense all wrapped up in one thrill ride. Five stars, hands down! Don't read this one at night.

I thought the book was very well written. Kept me wondering what will happen next. I really thought I knew who the killer was but I wasn't even close. I would read another book from this author.

FBI Special Agent Kelly Jones is called to her old alma mater where a serial killer favors young girls coming from powerful families. Her bodies hung up in a tunnel, their chest is carved open and rips severed from the spine. Behind them he leaves a painting with the blood of his previous victim.

The surprising involvement of Jake Riley, a former FBI agent no head of security of one of the victims father, in her investigations doesn't help either but word is, that Riley has to be involved in whatever happens in the investigations.

When more girls and suspects die, Kelly receives an invitation to follow the killer into the tunnels alone. Pressured to at least rescue the latest kidnapped girl she begins her descent.

I'm not impressed at all with this debut novel. In fact I'm happy to have finished it. The story is quite old and has been written a hundred times. Lacking new additions to the plot and main characters that just fell flat without much personality, this book feels like a timer filler that you pick up during commercials or while waiting in the doctor's office.
Don't get me wrong, the last third had a bit more excitement and the book got better but the ending came as expected: very unsuccessful and unimaginative.

Having the second novel of this series somewhere in my pile I'm tempted to give it away without even looking at it.

First in a planned series featuring FBI Special Agent Kelly Stone and her partner Roger Morrow. "Tunnels" finds Stone & Morrow investigating the serial killings of students at a prestigious New England college, their bodies found in the tunnels under the campus with strange symbols painted around them. The need to find the killer takes on a new urgency after another student is taken shortly after the agents' arrival.

Though not the most original or complicated plot, the characters are smart, the author avoids most of the cliches that can hamper female lead characters in this genre, and there's a nice mentor / father type relationship between Stone and Morrow. Fans of the show Criminal Minds will like this one as it has the same race-against-the-clock tension / feel to the investigation.

    Sequel is "Boneyard" (ISBN 0778325393)

strange to describe a serial killer book as cozy reading--but that's how i found THE TUNNELS, about a serial killer targeting the daughters of powerful men, murdering them in the tunnels underneath a New England college.

i read it during commercials, to make myself sleepy before going to bed, while waiting to take my turn in the bathroom, as i ate... i thought this book is ok, interesting enough, written well enough, paced good enough.

... maybe it's not strange at all but just very kind. the book was NOT good enough to distract me from the million and one other things i want to do these holidays.

others who read a formula followed to the letter would be more scathing, i suppose. they expect surprises and memorable characters, which are sadly lacking in this book. Kelly Jones, the FBI agent was like any other tough FBI agent, her tragic past did not make her more interesting because so many other FBI agent-characters also had tragic pasts; her partner Jake was bland. and though the writing was easy on the eye, the plot was predictable.

the attempts to inject attraction between Kelly and Jake seemed forced... i wince (embarrassed for the writer) every time i encounter these instances

but let me be kind. we all shouldn't expect remarkable stories all the time anyway. our reading palate has to take a break from intense and unforgettable reading experiences once in a while.

which is why we should be grateful that there are fluff and OK books out there. i am grateful, believe me. i am about to read the sequel BONEYARD--because i still have a million and one things to do and i don't want a book that's too distracting.

An FBI Special Agent returns to her alma mater to hunt down a killer who uses the tunnels beneath the college for his bizarre, ritual killings. Chilling descriptions and suspenseful scenes make this book a great read. Can’t wait for the next one!

This is the September Chiller Author of the Month selection and it is certainly not what I normally read, but it was very good. Refreshingly, the heroine didn't annoy me the way most heroines do. The ending was genuinely surprising and I was glad that I hadn't figured it out by the time the main character does, but I wasn't far behind.
