  • Melinda Jensen: Generally addressed as Mel, she is the narrator of this book. She describes herself as broken, and joins Henry's family because she never had one and she finds something captivating about Henry. She considers Shelly to be her sister..
  • Shelly: One of the girls who is already at the ranch when Mel arrives. Mel quickly becomes close to her and they bond, considering themselves sisters.
  • Henry: The captivating man who rescues Mel from her sticky park bench. Mel describes him as having this ability to know everything about a person and having a power over people. She and the rest of his family practically worship at his feet.
  • Leila: Another one of Mel's sisters, Leila is described as having sharp points and edges.
  • Junior: One of Mel's brothers. Mel describes him as dripping with want, wanting and needing to be praised and accepted.
  • The "blank" Important Man: A man who promises to listen to Henry's music but never shows.
  • Angela: A girl who Henry inducts into the family but doesn't seem to be broken as all the other girls are. She refuses Henry, something no one on the ranch would even consider.
