“Well...perhaps this is a work of startling genius for some other folks but I certainly didn't care for it. Seems like Ms. Welty was trying to invent some sort of modern American folktale and it just didn't work for me. I was missing the references (if there were any) and the rest of it just seemed like a relatively boring tale of mythic love. I do think that if this had been written by a man it would be held up as a paragon of chauvinist writing. ”
