i'm slowly working my way through the dark is rising series - of which this is the third i believe.

somehow i missed it as a voracious fantasy reader in my youth. such a shame! it's the kind of series that i'm enjoying now, but i would have really loved as a kid.

I really liked Bran, but it took a while for Wales to grow on me. It's not my favorite in the series, but still enjoyable.

This was an interesting book and was original just its theme was kind of weird and it had some boring parts.

My second favorite in this series, Cooper's view of Wales is gorgeous, making me ache to visit. Here is where the Arthurian story line really comes into play, and Cooper does a great job of making it her own.

This is number 4 in the Dark is rising series. I had a hard time following sometimes. The ending is kind of lame.

    Editorial review
There is a Welsh legend about a harp of gold, hidden within a certain hill, that will be found by a boy and a white dog with silver eyes -- a dog that can see the wind. Will Stanton knew nothing of this when he came to Wales to recover from a severe illness. But when he met Bran, the strange boy who owned a white dog, he began to remember. For Will is the last-born of the Old Ones, immortals dedicated to saving the world from the forces of evil, the Dark. And it is Will's task to wake -- with the golden harp -- the six who must be roused from their long slumber in the Welsh hills to prepare for the last battle between the Dark and the Light.

Focus all on Will, but a nice romp through the welsh countryside

Once again, Cooper shows she has a fantastic way with words. I absolutely love how the magic is described in this book--evocative, believable, and carrying with it the feel of the British Isles. And I especially like how this book shows the two sides of Will, as both boy and Old One, and how those two sides can sometimes conflict. Bran was also exceptionally well-characterized. Flawed, arrogant, a bit of a mystery, but ultimately a good and loving person.

Favorite line: "Rhys was all elbows and indignation."

Part of Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series. In this installment, Will Stanton is recovering from a serious illness and goes to stay with relatives in rural Wales. Arthurian legend and Celtic mythology are woven beautifully into this series, and particularly in this volume.

I read this because it is one of the books that Walden Media has made into a film. If you don't know about Walden Media, they take well-known children's books and make them into GREAT movies. This book, however, is MUCH better than the movie. I like to read the book before I see the movie. So much has been changed from the book.

    A highly recommended read.
