“Shows the aftermath of World War I and the outcome of the Paris Peace conference on the victors, vanquished and idol bystanders of the first world war. The parsing of Europe is interesting (especially Romania and Poland), but the back channel deals with Japan and the Arabs, as well as the interplay of the victors internal politics with the Russian revolution are the real meat of the book.”

“Very good, but it's helpful to know alot about the period and personalities from other sources before reading it. It helps to get more maps.”

Yes, I believe the carving up of the defeated countries as if they were Thanksgiving turkeys and Christmas hams set the stage for much of the unrest and violence we still deal with today. The author does try to take a more objective and less accusatory tone, implying the three main powers did the best they could at the time. However, there is more than one book on this topic and all I've read does not change my mind. Still, a brilliantly written addition to the field.”
