found out about this book because the author was on a list of books banned in Nazi Germany; it's a satirical anti-war story; very funny and I even read parts to my then 7-year old son; has a very middle European flavor; set during the first World War, it has sometimes been compared to Catch-22 in its insider's view of the military and wartime; apparently not very well known in the West, I really liked this book

One of my favourite books. It's an ironic statement anti war, the tyranism of the Habsburgerers, the bureaucratism, militarism and idiocracy of their state and reign and apparently any deeply important political fact of that time in bohemia. Though it's never getting serious and boring but always light and funny. It's brilliant in it's way and timeless - you can learn more about the time and about yourself than by one year's school history lessons or ten years of reading newspapers - and specially: you'll learn the truth...

Hilarious satire of World War One and the stupidity of war from the point of view of a reluctanct soldier Schweik.

An amazing book. It is unfinished but that really does not matter. Hysterical at times. I was laughing so hard, I had to stop reading for minutes at a time throughout the different passages of the book.

overshadowed by catch 22 but i think it's much better, the idiocy can be over the top but it's one of those books that makes other people think you're crazy when you wet yourself laughing on the tube.

It's an amazing book. You can especially appreciate it, if you know Czech mentality. And if you don't, just read the book. You will see!
