In the beginning, Peter and his friends from an orphanage board a ship called Neverland to go to the land where King Zarboff III resides, to serve him as slave boys. But when Peter meets Molly, a mysterious girl who...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Peter and the Star-Catchers is a book about a boy who goes on a ship as an orphan, not knowing is going to work for the evil king as a maid. Soon trouble strikes when the boat crashes into the fastest and most feared boat on the sea, The Sea Devil. It is said to be the fastest ship ever built. When the captain Black Stache goes after the treasure Peter, his new friend Molly, and all of the rest of his friends must save the box from getting into Stache's clutch or it could mean serious trouble. Soon they run into an even bigger problem they get stranded on an island with Stache and other terrible creatures. What can they possibly do to get of this island with out getting hurt? It seems as though there are so many characters though, but I happen to find Molly as my favorite because she can always fix something if it goes wrong, but in this book she finally faces a challenge. This is defiantly a book you couldn't relate to real life. The only thing you could relate to being real is being on ship that is going to and island. Many felt fear in the book and many may have felt as thought they were scared. Some of them felt so much fear that they cried in the book. I really don't think I have felt that much fear, but I have felt a lot of fear before. If I were to rate this I would give it as many stars as you could give a book. This book is a really good book and might be just the book you are looking for an adventure book. I would definitely recommend this book for any one who wants a good book to read. I really don't have a favorite part because I find this book so enjoy that there isn't really a favorite part for me.”

In the tradition of the old "Fractured Fairy Tales" bit from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show, Peter and the Starcatchers puts a new and delightful spin on the old story.
Yes, they take some liberties with the original tale. But the truth is, most people's knowledge of the Peter Pan story comes from Hollywood... the movies, which no doubt took their share of liberties from the original story as well. Yes, true die-hard Peter Pan fans (if there are any *winks*) will object. Just like any "remake" of any piece of literature or film or music is bound to earn it's own "booing section", so will this book.
But that doesn't make it unworthy of praise. Barry and Pearson are geniuses! ...in my humble opinion. It's incredible, some of the things they thought up to explain everything that's taken "as is" by the general public when it comes to the original story. Mermaids? Pixies? Little boys who don't age and can fly? Barry and Pearson have given simple, and at the same time complex, explanations for these phenomena. A little bit of science-fiction never hurt anyone.
And PIRATES! What more can I say? Arr, matey!
