If you do read this, you will soon recognize my irritation with Cameron's use of descriptive modifiers during testimonials.”

When I signed on I was excited about learning how to use the seven tools the author outlines and the discussion that would ensue within our group. What actually happened is that I was initially annoyed with Cameron's writing style and attitude. I felt the author wasn't living in the same world as most of the members of our group. In short a difference of socio-economics: The writer's characters all lived lifestyles where money or access to resources seemed not an issue nor were there any stories of dieters learning how to balance family time and family meals with their efforts to use the tools. Other members expressed similar dissatisfaction with the book, but we all agreed that the tools are worth using. Despite my personal annoyance with the author's anecdotes and voice, I think the tools are sound, and towards the end I was glad I finished the book. I will be using the tools to help me achieve my health and creative writing goals.”

I always get roped into reading her books by the promise of inspiration and motivation that the blurb tells me, but once I start reading they're all the same book. After reading this book, which focuses on using "Writing Pages" every morning to free up one's creativity, I was not motivated or inspired, just irritated. Cameron trots out the same tired formula and code words to try to get her readers to feel better about themselves. The book is relentlessly cheerful, with every single case study having their life magically transformed in the most wondrous way. It's just all too saccharine for me, plus she waits til the end and then pushes her ideas and about spirituality and god on us. The best thing I could say about this book was that it was an easy, fast read. ”

It's pretty standard diet advice - eat right and exercise, but Julia Cameron is looking at it from the other side of the coin - what's keeping you from getting to your goals. If it were truly as easy as change your eating habits and move more, we'd all be thin. The truth of the matter is there is something sapping motivation, dedication and judgement that can't just be attributed to being lazy or not caring. Her process of Morning Pages and journaling questions help to draw out thoughts, feeling and admissions that may be irritating and painful, but in the end are the reason that keeps you from hitting those goals.
One caveat - if you're going to 'do' this book, you need to be ready. Some of the exercises are very thought provoking and will potentially bring things up that are painful and hard to deal with.
That being said, this was the right book for me right now. I'm looking forward to seeing the results as I continue to work through the exercises. ”
