From the back of the book:

Set in the godforsaken landscape of the Holocaust, The Gates of the Forest tells a story that addresses the conscience and sensibility of our world today.

Gregor, a young Hungarian Jew hiding from the Nazis in the forests and towns of Eastern Europe, allows a fellow refugee to sacrifice himself in his place. From that point on, Gregor struggles to find redemption and to learn the meaning of his own guilt, God's guilt, and the suffering of the world. He flees; he masquerades as a deaf-mute; and finally, in an unintentional betrayal, he re-enacts the crime of Judas.
