First Sentence edit see section history

Mexico early in the 1840s, as painted by artist Daniel Egerton, had an idylic air. Though a fortress guarded its port city of Veracruz, there was little in the bucolic scens of prancing horses and trudging burros toreflect the turmoil of Mexico's recent past, much less warn of the disatrous war that soon would turn these same sites into bloody battlegrounds.
