The Duellists is such an elegantly witty, visually breathtaking evocation of the Napoleonic Era that I was somewhat taken aback when its British director, Ridley Scott, arrived for an interview dressed in blue jeans and wondering how badly the latest New York City blizzard would hurt the film's box office and whether the Fine Arts Theatre was really the most desirable showcase in the first place.
