I enjoyed this – like most of Minette Walters’s novels it is engaging and surprising. One of the most under –rated UK writers:)

You have to like British dark suspense with all that that entails of everything having hidden meaning and no one is who they appear to be at any given time. I know I love watching these on BBC America, with all of the visual cues and atmosphere.
My sister's been on me to read Minette's books, so this was the way I chose to do the first one. I'll read more and listen to more.
Four British atmospheric suspenseful beans......”
“I listened to half of this book then finished it by reading the last few chapters. The CD version was interesting but it was faster to just read it. ”

When a homeless man starve himself in someones garage on the "nice" side of town there wasn't much news coverage. The man went by an assumed named and had burned his finger prints away so the police could never identify him. Six months latter, Amanda is still haunted by finding the dead man in her garage and wants to find out who he was. The only help she finds is a journalist, Deacon. Deacon goes an the quest to really figure out who the dead man is and if he connects with two missing person cases. Anyone hiding dark secrets that gets in the way of Deacon's quest is about to have them found out.
I enjoyed this book very much but it lacked some of the suspense I typically find in Walter's books. The articles in the beginning of the book were also a little dry and I also put it aside for a while because of them. The pace picks up a great deal as the real story starts to develop.

“A brilliant writer, very suspenseful and also clever. She really knows her stuff but doesn't make it obvious. I'm into reading all her books now.”
