“My Vane laughs with the Little People, a spotted leopard hunts for innocent children, and all the people live in mortal fear of a bloodthirsty queen. Perhaps his most triumphant and deepest work of phantasie, MacDonald invites you into a world of marvelous wonder certain to broaden (if not twist) your imagination completely. ”

Mr. Vane lives in an old house that has been in his family for generations. One day he notices an odd creature making its way through the library; this turns out to be the birdlike Mr. Raven, who introduces him to a mysterious world beyond a magic mirror stored in the garret of the house. Vane's presence in this other world causes difficulties. The work is a slow read, with its antiquated language, but it is rich with Christian symbolism and well worth the effort.”

I can easily see why MacDonald was such a great influence on and source of inspiration for many other famous writers because he vividly conjures up other worlds into which you travel in the pages of his books.”

Lewis chose George Macdonald as his guide through the Heaven of The Great Divorce. I foresee more readings of Lilith by me.”
