  • Kat: A sixteen-year-old girl who was raised as a housekeeper for her father, Ab Drem. She is strong and capable, and though she fulfills her duties well, she is constantly drawn by the song of the place forbidden to her: the sea.
  • Nall: A Rig, or seal-man, whom Kat rescues from the sea.
  • Ab Drem: Kat's father. When he was young, he went to the Hills and returned with a red-haired Hill woman, earning him great disrespect from the prim Upslope community. Now he is constantly fretting about what will make others think well of him again.
