Liked It“Truthfully, I'm not sure why I like this book so much. It's not especially well-written in any literary sense, but it's certainly compelling. We know virtually nothing about the protagonist/narrator, not even his real name though he becomes known as Dougie later, and he spends most of the book...” see full review » see other reviews » |

“For the most part it is a good book, however, it was said to be a comedy, or dark comedy, and I must say it was a big disappointment in that category.
It’s an OK book, but really not for everyone.”
“Predictable and tongue-in-cheek humor. ”

But that's okay. It is kind of funny, and a very quick read (if it wasn't so short, I might have told you to not waste your time with it). But, I guess I would recommend this book.”

Consequently, he fails where the far superior novel "The Cleaner" succeeds.”

It's not especially well-written in any literary sense, but it's certainly compelling. We know virtually nothing about the protagonist/narrator, not even his real name though he becomes known as Dougie later, and he spends most of the book pretending to be someone else. There are MANY murders in this book, as that's the point, but it's not what you might expect. While some of the murders are explicitly described, the overall clumsiness of the perpetrator and his complete lack of effective "graphic" description means that they're not especially shocking. The killings are not used for their horror as you may expect, because the emotion isn't the point either, these are plot points for getting from A to B. In fact, the book includes a kill list and the whole thing reads like the a serial killers diary, a recounting of how he crosses stuff off his list, but like most diaries it's quite banal and prosaic. Truthfully I'm not sure I like the conclusion, but the entire thing is so odd I don't really think it matters.”

I enjoyed maybe the first half, and then the whole premise just became boring. I had to force myself to finish the book, to see if the ending would redeem the middle and it really didn't. I didn't think there was very much oomph behind the twist. It seemed rather half-hearted and a little contrived. Besides, Dougie's a huge idiot and he really just annoyed me.”

One of the many things that makes this book funny as well is the fact that you are smarter then the protagonist - who is, of course, a serial killer!”
