Characters/People edit see section history

  • Lindsey Abraham: The "new girl," Lindsey just moved from California over to New Jersey. Jeffrey has a crush on her since the first day of school, when he showed her around.
  • Thaddus "Tad" Isben: Jeffrey's best friend. He also had cancer, and his late effects are worse than Jeffrey's, putting him in a wheelchair. He's quite outspoken and doesn't have much of a filter system when he speaks. He tutors Jeffrey in math in exchange for "walking lessons."
  • Mr. McGrath: The gym teacher who teaches Jeffrey's after-school class. In his high school years, he was a track star and called "Flash."
  • Steven Alper: Steven is Jeffrey's bigger and older brother. He is also Jeffrey's hero. When Jeffrey developed cancer, he was 5 years old, Steven was always there for him. He is known as the perfect child, recieving straight A's in school and barely ever getting into trouble. But that all changed when he broke up with Annette and moved to Africa to join a drumming circle. Jeffrey looks up to his brother a lot and he's devastated when he doesn't get to talk to him much anymore.
  • Jeffrey Alper: Jeffrey battled luekemia when he was a young boy. He is now in the 8th grade and has to walk with a limp, a cancer after-effect. His brain does not also work quite right due to methotrexate, so he struggles in school. His best friend, Tad, is also a cancer survivor, so they like to stay close to each other. Tad's after effects are a little worse, and he has to use a wheelchair. Jeffrey struggles in this book with friendships, relationships, and his own family.
  • Annette: She is Steven's girlfriend from the first book, and she cut her hair very short for Jeffrey when he had cancer. Since then, she and Steven have broken up.
  • Brianna Slack: Brianna is a girl in Tad and Jeff's class. Tad liked her since sixth grade, and he called her Zitzilla after she told him he looked funny when he walked. Because of that, Tad has used a wheelchair ever since. Tad tries to be nicer to Brianna, and she begins to like him again.
  • Mr. Laurenzano: Jeff and Tad's science teacher.
  • Yvonne Ibsen: She is Tad's 8 year old sister. Tad thinks of her as an extra child his parents had in case he died, so he gave her the nickname "ERC" - Emergency Replacement Child
  • Dr. Galley: She is a guidance counselor who gives out candy hearts and helped Steven deal with Jeffrey having cancer. In this book, she talks to Jeffrey about the upcoming state tests.
  • Mrs. Ibsen: Tad's mom
  • Mrs. Alper: Jeff and Steven's mom.
  • Mr. Alper: Jeff and Steven's dad. He is obsessed with math and can't understand why it doesn't come easily to Jeffrey.
  • Miss Palma: She is an English teacher who likes teaching the play Cyrano de Bergerac. She taught Steven and is currently teaching Jeff.
