SPOILERS HERE: The story takes place over the course of the end of Jen's high school junioryear, that summer and the first part of her senior year. Jen, a sarcastic, confused Goth girl with plenty of attitude bets her friends one lip piercing that she can turn a geek boy bad. Her preference in boys is usually a guy with long, stringy black hair, tight black pants, black eyeliner, pierced ears, tongue and lip. He would be tall and skinny and weird and, usually, high. She sets her eye on Trevor, though, a geek whose life and looks are as opposite as possible to hers. Trevor drags her along on his sci-fi watching movie parties with his nerd-herd, as she calls them, and to the Senior Center for charity work. They even end up bowling together when his family shows up to where her foster family is having family night, much to Jen's mortification. But it's all part of the plan to get him to come to one of her parties - definitely nothing like what Trevor calls a party. At least, that's what she keeps telling herself. She is vexed with herself for finding herself enjoying being around Trev. He's different from anyone she's ever dated, and before long she begins to respect him. That turns to a genuine liking and friendship. After a camping trip with the two families, where Jen is forced to sleep with her foster sister, who she scathingly refers to as "the cheerleader", in a tent, Jen's feelings deepen even more. This stiffens her resolve to turn Trevor bad, so that she will deserve him. She finally gets him to one of her parties, where everyone is either drunk, stoned or making out - or a combination of all three. See doesn't really like having Trevor there, so they leave. The foster family she is living with soon grow on her, and they ask her if they can adopt her. That forces her to confront her past, which includes a father who was extremely abusive and was killed by the police when he was shooting at a young Jen, and her mother who is in prison for stabbing her husband to death when he tried to molest pre-teen Jen. She visits her mother, which makes her realize how much she wants to be a part of a real family. The Clark's adopt her. After another ill fated party, Jen comes to the conclusion that she has changed, and she likes the way she is now: good - almost good enough for Trevor. Just when it seems she can know happiness, Trevor finds out about the bet. Jen's world crumbles as Trevor's anger comes between them. A new girl to the school, Jane, becomes Jen's first real friend. She helps Jen to get through the heartache of losing Trevor. At the Homecoming dance, Jane rigs the King & Queen election so that Trevor and Jen win. They dance and kiss, then Trevor leaves Jen standing in the middle of the dance floor, alone again. But the kiss proves to Jen that Trevor still has feelings for her. She decides to apologize to him for hurting him, though she knows they can never be together again. Shortly after her apology, Trevor invites her to come and see him sing at the school play. He sings a song he's written for her, kisses her and tells her he loves her. As Jen says in the end, her life of being a geek girl loving her geek boy begins.
