I read this book out loud to my 3rd graders and they loved it! They were begging me to keep reading when I got to the end of a chapter or if I left them hanging in suspense until the next day. I would highly suggest reading this book.

A funny story about a boy who wants to celebrate his 10th birthday with a party. He has not had much luck with birthday parties in the past and feels a lot of pressure to make this one successful. He manages but with a lot of misadventures along the way.

Imagine you are 9 years old; you will turn 10 in 1 month. You receive a card from your Dad asking, "What are you going to do for your big day?" If you are anything like Charley Maplewood, you would freak out!

Charley is not a big fan of birthday parties, but because he is turning the big one-oh, charley feels pressured to do something special. Even if that means planning his own birthday party. Charley has one major problem: who would he invite to this party. He has no real friends. But this doesn't stop Charley from plotting and planning his party. He doesn't even give up when he burns down their garage and his mom officially cancels the party. Charley still hopes to pull of something big for his special day. Things go from bad to worse as the party starts; it's a total snorefest until an unexpected visitor arrives and changes everything!

The Big One-Oh is a touching and funny story about friendship. Readers will find themselves laughing out loud at Charley's antics. This book would make a great read aloud because readers can identify with Charley's will to find true friends and feel like he belongs. They will also be intrigued by his birthday plans and want to read to the end to find out just how Charley Maplewood celebrartes his Big One-Oh.
