Agree - read in pieces! I have a fairly good background in music (not a professional) but still find this hard going. I really wanted to learn more about 20th Century music - but i think i will get recordings to go with certain composers, then read the applicable text. I enjoy the historical background - it's a history lesson with a musical twist.

This is a very difficult book. If one is not a musician, I think it is best read in pieces and not necessarily, in any particular order.

Did anyone who is not a professional musician (or someone steeped in music theory) enjoy this? After 150 pages I gave up. I am neither a professional musician nor someone with a great deal of experience or understanding of music theory. I have a wide experience listening to 20th century music, but I was unable to get anything out of this book.
