If you have ever wondered what it would be like to
live in another country for a year with your children,
in Mommy, Are We French Yet? you will discover that
it is not an insurmountable task, but it’s made doubly
rewarding when the day-to-day chores and challenges
are approached with humor.
Shawn Underwood moved her family, her husband and three kids, along with
her sister’s family, to the south of France to experience the joys and frustrations
of living abroad first hand.

“I do admit the language barrier is becoming an increasing problem
... for Craig. I, on the other hand, am getting along famously when the
French speaker talks SLOWLY. Today, for instance and after much
debate, the kids and I all agreed to brave the hair salon. Unfortunately,
the head beautician in the male/female salon is a “fast talker,” my pleas
of “lentement, s’il vous plaît” (slowly, please) falls on deaf ears and
disaster looms on the horizon.”

Characters/People edit see section history

  • Shawn Underwood: Yikes! I guess the story is all about ME! I'm the main character and the person who gets herself into all sorts of dilemma's with language mishaps.
  • Craig: My husband and the other half of the 'he said—she said' stories in the book. He is not fluent in French but considers himself an expert in 'sign language'.
  • Austin: The oldest and bossiest of my three children. Arggg—he turns 13 on this vacation. Lovely age.
  • Conner: Middle child—he finds trouble in and out of the United States, however he surprises us as he seamlessly adjusts to new friends and new situations.
  • Leslie: The youngest and most impressionable of the three. She watches all with great interest and takes in much more than we initially suspected.
  • Shannon: My younger sister and professed 'know-it-all' in French language. She corrects many of my French faux pas and is a willing partner in our adventures.
  • Rick: Shannon's husband and unsuspecting butt of our long-standing joke. he was great at speaking French if conjugating verbs was required.
  • Levio: The caretaker on our property. He speaks neither French, English or Italian but a combination of all three—totally incomprehensible to anyone, even the French. He is very good at hand gestures and likes Craig better than moi.

First Sentence edit see section history

Have you ever vacationed with your husband and children for an entire year? I'm hear to tell you it can be done without killing each other. Our (typical domestic) vacations usually start in a civil manner. We locate the rental car, check out the car for dings and dents, laugh about the roll down windows or the odd smell in the rent-a-wreck, and then drive out of the lot with the windshield wipers on instead of the lights. Things invariably go bad when we have to navigate our way to a pre-destined vacation spot, or in one case, when we went to fill up the newly rented minivan. "Shawn, unlock the gas cap, please," Craig said as he stomped from one foot to another in the biting cold. "I can't find it, oh wait here it is, oops, there goes the hood," I said as I rolled down the window and quickly rolled it up again. "Hurry up, it's cold out here. Oh never mind, I'll do it myself."
