“A phenomenal new series in the spirit of the greats. A relatable character, sexual tension to die for, plot twists and turns that keep things interesting and a writing style that makes the book impossible to put down!! #fantastic”Alina Andreushkina wrote this review 5 days ago. “After so many people saying I had to read this series (and soon :D), I finally had the sense to start the Charley Davidson series! And wow! I'm an audiobook reader and I have to say Lorelei King is one of my Top 5 favorite narrators now, I'm always worried that sometimes a narrator might not be too good and ruin a series but I within the first 5 minutes of listening to First Grave on the Right any of those worries were gone, if anything (for me) Lorelei makes this series even better with her narration!
So starting with Charley... I love her character! Out of all the paranormal/fantasy romance novels I've read I have never come across a character like Charley, she reminds me a bit of Jess from the tv show New Girl, with her quirky and loveable personality. And yes I share her and Cookie's addiction to coffee (good to know I'm not the only one! lol) Charley is a private investigator and a grim reaper - now if the first thought that pops into your head is a skeleton like creature out of a horror movie or cartoon you couldn't be more wrong! - she's a normal person with the gift of seeing dead people and who can help them cross over, not much huh? unless you consider the sexy hooded fella who turns up every now and then that no other human being but her can see :D Ok I'm getting distracted back to Charley, she has a tough as nails side to her as well. She's immensely stubborn and her sarcasm knows no bounds, which is great when it comes to the scenes with Reyes (who we'll get to in a minute :D), Uncle Bob and well every character she comes into contact with! lol She won't stand down, she fights for those she loves and she's seen some of the weirdest and horrible things and not just when it comes to her line of work as a reaper but as a PI too. All in all she is quickly becoming one of my top favourite heroines!
Now Reyes Farrow!Reyes. Reyes. Reyes. Where do I begin? I don't want to give too much away but his character pops in and out of the book quite often and when he does OH MY! I wish I was Dutch *sighs* oh well you'll know why when you read the book,anyways...he is Alpha in every sense of the word, he has the whole dominant personality and everyone is scared of him - I mean runaway don't mention his name scared - except for our Charley. He is just as stubborn as the reaper herself great when comes to a clash of wills between them in the series. Basically Reyes is Reyes there is no other :D
The side characters in this book which includes Cookie (Charleys best-friend,colleague and neighbour), Uncle Bob ( or you-bie to Charley), Angel (a ghost who doesn't want to cross over and also works for Charley) and Garrett Swopes (Swoaps to Charley) are fantastic! They are as much a part of the book as the main characters are they feature a lot in First Grave on the Right and are great company to Charley's personality!
I would recommend this book to any fan of the paranormal it's a seriously good book and series, well worth reading :)
First Grave on the Right is a very well written book by Darynda Jones, the dialogue is so witty, each character is distinctive and the plot to the book was brilliant! I wish I could write and create characters like she does, I started listening to this book and didn't stop until I finished! ”
“This was a pretty cute story. I enjoyed the heavy sarcasm immensely. It was a fun read and I've already put the next one on hold. This was a lighter supernatural read, though not nearly as light at Mary Janice Davidson. ”Jennifer J wrote this review Thursday, October 10, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful?
