This is the first book I ever read and it will probably be the last one I read! I pick it up and re-read it three or four times a year (I have lost track of how many copies I have gone through!). I started kindergarten with this book in my backpack as my 'blankie.'

With L'Amour, it's hard to separate the book from the movie. In this case, it's twice as hard. If you can read it and NOT see John Wayne in the title role, you are either more of a book lover or less of a movie lover than I am. Wayne did a great job on what is one of L'Amour's best westerns.

This novel was considered by John Wayne and many others as being Louis L'Amour's finest work.

I loved the character of Hondo, because I was able to visualize him as John Wayne. I really liked the way that the book ended because it tied up loose ends better than most L'Amour works.
