“Beautifully told story of an ordinary person & his wishes for a second chance w/ the woman he loves. Manny is the manager of a Red Lobster & the night in the title is the last night the restaurant will be open. As Manny goes through his day, we come to understand him w/ bittersweet empathy. Nothing happens in this story, but such is O'Nan's gift for immersing the reader in setting & characters, I came to feel for Manny & wished for his heart's desires as I swiftly turned the pages. For anyone who's always tried to do the right things in life but realizes sometimes the best isn't enough.
