  • Kit Corrigan: The first person narrator. Kit is a dancer from Providence, Rhode Island. Her family has never been well-off and she's come to New York to try and find a job. However, when she arrives, the father of her ex-boyfriend who is a renowned mobster offers her a lot of free things to get some favors out of her and she soon finds herself in a dangerous web of lies.
  • Billy: Kit's jealous and protective boyfriend, Jamie's bestfriend
  • Billy Benedict: Kit's ex-boyfriend. He has anger management issues at some points and gets jealous easily. He enlisted in the army, and his dad is Nate Benedict, a famous mobster.
  • Nate Benedict: Billy's father, who is a renowned mobster and offers Kit a new apartment, a complete wardrobe and a job, which she takes warily.
  • Bridget "Delia" Corrigan: Kit's aunt who is very strict and follows the Bible very closely. She disappeared a few years before the story started.
  • James "Jamie" Corrigan: One of Kit's siblings. He is best friends with Billy and he and Kit are extremely close. He also enlists in the army with Billy, even though he has to lie about his age to get in.
  • Hank Greeley: He lives in the apartment above Kit's and is a very sweet boy who takes a liking to her.
  • Margaret "Muddie" Corrigan: The other of Kit's siblings. Muddie always follows the rules and can't keep secrets.
  • Mrs. Greeley: Hank's mother, who at first dislikes Kit but eventually takes to liking her.
  • Jeff Toland: A Hollywood star Kit becomes friendly with during her summer at a theatre camp.
  • Shirley: A dancer in Kit's first job, This Girl From Scranton!. At the beginning of the book, Kit boards with Shirley and her mom, who are both cruel and huge gossipers. Shirley will also make fun of Kit with every chance.
  • Elena: A housekeeper for the "Corrigan Three."
  • Frank Costello: A famous gangster.
  • Da: Kit, Jamie, and Maggie's Father
  • Ray Mirto: A famous gangster.
  • Ted Roper: The manager at the Lido Club.
  • Daisy: A friend of Kit's from theatre camp whom she stumbles upon accidentally in the city.
