Liked It“I enjoyed it, although the funky old time script for the parts about the travelling poor soldier-turned-crusader-turned knight of some religious order was tough to read and almost made me get a huge headache, it was a good story and I enjoyed it whether or not the "tooth" they "found" right...” see full review » see other reviews » |

“A very interesting science fiction but not so strange that you would be turned away”

Or him . ”

Its about a marine biologist who's career is damaged in a freak accident when looking for a giant squid. So to restore his name he travels to Scotland where he grew up to look for the Loch Ness monster.
Is it real? read it and find out.”
“I gave this a 3.5. There are some really exciting pulse pounding moments in this book that really had me going. ”

As you may guess from the title, the majority of the story takes place in Scotland. Scotland and Australia, for some reason, seem romantic to me - not romantic like candles and kisses, but romantic in the sense of exotic and lending to flights of imagination. This book features a protagonist of mixed American and Scottish descent, a scientist caught up in the Loch Ness legend, of course; what else with that title? Not only were the premise, the characters, and the action well developed, but the quotes at chapter beginnings were interesting - excerpts from Nessie writings through the years.”

He does improve over the course of the book and his "issues" do come to light and explain his "quirks,' but he's still annoying. I was hoping for a stronger, more likeable lead. The family problems, the irritating would-be Scottish girlfriend and the jerky former colleague make this a real chore to read at times. The dialogue does wear on one's nerves after awhile, too. Alten doesn't deliver it smoothly. There is action as well as some creepy moments but the numerous history lessons and diary entries slow the book down. I like Alten's ideas but he takes too long to deliver on them. Not a bad book but not great, either...”
