I really enjoyed this book! Nothing like a good end of the world story to keep you awake late into the night wanting to see how it all turns out!

Ok- so I fibbed- I didn't actually finish this one. I was very disappointed! This was not a creepy conspiracy story like the synopsis would lead you to believe- it was a silly, overdramatic conspiracy story that I decided I would not waste my valuable reading time on. I really had high hopes for this book and author. Maybe his others are better?

The book has a very fast rhythm, seems more like a movie than a book. There are too many acronyms, which confuse the reader, and some of the archeological sites seem just "thrown in there" (e.g. Angkor Wat). Overall a good book.

I've just read a UK edition of this book called 'The Mayan Prophecy'. It's a archeo-fiction novel (if such a term exists) written 10 years ago, but set in the present day. It mixes history, quasi-history, sci-fi and folklore into a reasonable doomsday thriller. It kept me page turning. And as with good sci-fi, I couldn't figure out exactly where the boundaries between fact and fantasy were.

I was a little surprised by how rapidly I was making progress through the novel. But then it occurred to me that the text was printed in unusually large print, and with unusually wide spacing. Later on I noticed that my edition had exactly 666 pages, a number with mystical significance. Cute. It's also a useful discussion point: reality can be manipulated to give the illusion of mystery. One wonders what else has been fiddled with to achieve a desired effect.

Something else that amused me was the funny little anachronistic assumptions the author made about life in 2012. Apparently cars are fitted with blood alcohol detectors, and psychiatrists have access to submarines. And more amusingly, dictaphones run out of tape part way through a recorded interview.

I felt the minor characters were particularly weak. Especially the whole Borgia back-story. With a name like 'Borgia' you'd expect him to be exactly what he was. But why give him a background in archaeology that was almost irrelevant? And why make him Secretary of State, and yet have a personal animosity for the hero? It was irrelevant. If such an improbable confluence of characteristics is required, the plot really ought to make better use of them. And as for the security guard, he was very thin.

What I liked about the novel was the unrelenting pace. And the mystery kept me intrigued. And of particular merit was the lack of detail in much of the archaeology... at no point did it lose me by inaccuracies so blatant that even I couldn't miss them.

It's not the best novel of its type. But its far from the worst.

Boy was that a ride. Far fetched and unrealistic but quite fun to read. And there's a part two... I didn't really like Dominique. Her character seems unstable. She didn't seem consistent. She seems really weak at times and too strong at others. I'll probably read part two. Hopefully its in paperback.

Amazing book. It's in Spanish but, really good! Talks about the Mayan Testament, it's pretty awesome, I really recommended for those who believe in prophecies or interest them this kind of topic! :D
