- Daenerys Targaryen: Daughter of King Aerys Targaryen and Queen Rhaella Targaryen, she was conceived and born during the War of the Usurper. Known as "Stormborn," Danaerys is currently fighting in the Free Cities to battle centuries-old city rule by slavery.
- Tywin Lannister: Patriarch of House Lannister
- Robb Stark: King of the North, son of Eddard and Catelyn Stark
- Jaime Lannister: Twin to Cersei and brother to Tyrion, he is a knight of the Kingsguard and is often called "The Kingslayer" due to his part in the usurpation of Aerys Targaryen.
- Tyrion Lannister: A dwarf, a son of Tywin Lannister. His height and appearance are scoffed at (many call him "The Imp") but his cunning and intelligence are difficult to equal.
- Sam Tarly: Otherwise known as "Ser Piggy", a fat steward of the Night's Watch, friend of Jon Snow's.
- Jaime: Otherwise known as the Kingslayer, a Lannister and member of the Kingsguard, twin brother of the Queen
- Jon Snow: A sworn brother of the Nights Watch, Jon Snow finds himself struggling with the life he's currently leading with the wildings and the vows that he swore to his brotherhood.
- Catelyn Stark: Wife of Lord Eddard Stark, daughter of House Tully of Riverrun.
- Bran Stark: 7 years old. The second to youngest Stark son, he aspires to become a knight.
- Arya: Daughter of Eddard and Catelyn Stark, 11 years old. In this book seen venturing with Gendry and Hot Pie.
- Ygritte: A wildling from the North, whose life was spared by Jon Snow
- Catelyn: Widow of Eddard Stark, father of Robb who is now King of the North.
- Cersei: Widowed Queen of Kings Landing, mother of King Joffrey Baratheon, ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. Twin sister to Jaime Lannister.
- Arya Stark: 9 years old. Youngest daughter of Eddard and Catelyn, she dislikes domestic tasks and feminine pursuits, instead opting for adventure and sword fighting. She is a fiercely cunning and resourceful girl.
