Good, but not my favorite by Nick Hornby.

Deep characters. Cool pop cultural references (as any Hornby book). You'll see 3 different generations interacting over a common issue: how to get over problems and make life worth living. Touching story, really lightens one's mood. Not my favorite Hornby though (high fidelity) but definitely worth reading.

“But then the next day you’re sitting in front of a journalist, and you’re all agreeing with a straight face that this fucking angel looked like Matt Damon, and loyalty seemed like the dumbest of all the virtues.” - A Long Way Down, Nick Hornby

Just finished reading A Long Way Down. It didn’t take very long at all to get through, I spent about four hours reading it. I thoroughly enjoyed it, though. Even though switching first person narratives is not my favourite form of writing, I found that it was interesting and illuminating to get into each character’s head. They are all different, with layered, multi-dimensional backgrounds. It is also laugh-out-loud funny, in the very real way, when you snort with laughter and people look over because you’re in a corner with a book, and they wonder what you’re laughing at. And yet, it touches on dark subjects — suicide and depression, mainly. The book showcases our modern world is a disturbing, yet incredibly astute and real way. Definitely a book I’d recommend.

A very funny book about a very serious topic, and many humanistic anecdotes that anyone can relate to, about the depths of human behaviour. Great fun and as a result, short read...

One of my all-time favourites, though mainly because it hit me at the right time.

Strange book to really like, I guess, considering the topic... Suicide... but Hornby does everything with such humor. For me it's a sense of this is just so crazy it works great for me. Love this guy's writing. Fast read. Couldn't put it down.
