  • Jane, Marchioness of Rievaulx: Heroine. Eighteen years old and recently widowed after the elderly and kind Jonas, Marquess of Rievaulx - more of a father than a husband - died after rescuing her from a life of misery. Has come to court as one of the Queen's Ladies. Had jilted Will, Earl of Dorset because Will was in love with Ellie, and Jane was in love with his younger brother, James. Friend and benefactor to Milly.
  • James Lacey: Second son to the Earl of Dorset. Eighteen years old and recently returned from war in the Lower Countries. Devastated by the horrors he witnessed there.
  • Milly Porter: Jane's childhood friend. Her father was exiled for treason and Milly has had to establish herself as a seamstress to support herself. She is very good at her work and relies on Jane as her patron and Jonas for supporting her.
  • Diego: James' manservant who accompanied him to war. Used to work for the Porter household before Silas was ruined. Has been in love with Milly for a long time.
  • Jonas Paton, Marquess of Rievaulx: Jane's elderly husband of six months. On a visit to Stafford Grange, he rescued Jane from her father's home and cares for Jane as a daughter. Died aged seventy shortly after a stroke, having provided well for Jane, but knowing that his sons would try to take her dowery and money from her.
  • Christopher 'Kit' Turner: Actor. Bastard son of the late Earl of Dorset and his mistress; half-brother of Will, James, Tobias, Catherine and Sarah. He despises the Lacey family. Infatuated with Milly.
  • Will Lacey, Earl of Dorset: Happily married to Ellie, with whom he has a newborn son and heir, Wilkins. James' older brother.
  • Ellie, Countess of Dorset: Married to Will with whom she has a son, Wilkins.
  • Silas Porter: Milly's father, exiled to war for treason.
