  • Clarissa 'Clary' Fray: Clary is a a pretty teenager who has red hair and green eyes. She is a Shadowhunter. She is dating Jace (as of City of Fallen Angels). She is Valentine and Jocelyn's daughter and has angel blood in her. She is also Sebastian's sister. Very stubborn and is willing to do anything for Jace.
  • Jonathan 'Jace' Wayland/Herondale: His real last name was Jonathan Herondale. Is the son of Stephen and Celine. His parents died before he was born and he was raised by Valentine until he was sent away to live with the Lightwoods. Is described as sarcastic yet caring. Has blonde hair, amber eyes, and is lean and muscular. Loves Clary.
  • Simon Lewis: Daylighter, the only vampire capable of being unaffected by sunlight because of Jace Lightwood (because he drank his blood); He wears the Mark of Cain; Clary's best friend. Is dorky yet has matured throughout the books.
  • Isabelle 'Izzy' Lightwood: The beautiful sister of Alec Lightwood. Shadow-hunter. Seems to be considering a relationship with Simon Lewis.
  • Alexander 'Alec' Gideon Lightwood: Brother of Isabelle Lightwood. He is gay and in love with a warlock named Magnus Bane. Sleek dark hair and bright blue eyes.
  • Magnus Bane: The High Warlock of Brooklyn; he has been a useful ally to the shadowhunters; Alec Lightwood's boyfriend, has cat-like eyes.
  • Jocelyn Fairchild Morgenstern: A Shadowhunter who left the Clave. Was married to Valentine and has two children- Clary and Sebastian/ Jonathan. Now engaged to Luke. Stole Clary's memories and kept her from who she really was. She has red hair like Clary and is an artist.
  • Lucian 'Luke' Garroway: The leader of the downtown NY werewolf pack. Engaged to Jocelyn. Once was a shadowhunter, but was turned into a werewolf by Valentine.
  • Maia Roberts: A werewolf who lived in New Jersey but came to NY after her now ex-boyfriend Jordan turned her into a werewolf. In Luke's pack. She discovers the truth about Jordan, she got back together with him.
  • Seelie Queen: Queen of the fairy court. Unable to lie, but very devious.
  • Raziel: the Angel of the Shadowhunters;
  • Jonathan Christopher Morgenstern: Clary's brother; the son of Valentine and Jocelyn but who also has demon blood. Currently goes by the name Sebastian. Has a plan..
  • Rebecca Lewis: Becky, Simon's older sister. Doesn't freak out when she finds out he's a vampire.
  • Maryse Lightwood: Isabelle, Alec, and Max's mother; the leader of the Institute in New York
  • Robert Lightwood: Isabelle's, Max's, and Alec's father
  • Lilith: A greater demon; she regards Sebastian as her son; possessed Jace and had a plan to use Simon's blood to resurrect Sebastian.
  • Max Lightwood: Isabelle and Alec's deceased younger brother; killed by Sebastian, or Johnathan Morgenstern.
  • Amatis Herondale: Luke's sister and first wife of Stephen Herondale.
  • Helen Blackthorn: Aline Penhallow's girlfriend. Has lots of brothers and sisters. Her family runs Los Angeles Institute.
  • Aline Penhallow: Jia Penhallow's daughter
  • Meliorn: faerie knight; the fairie's representative to the Council. One of Isabelle's ex-boyfriends.
  • Jordan Kyle: Simon's roommate and his Praetorian Guard; a member of the Praetor Lupus; a werewolf; bit Maia, making her a werewolf; in love with Maia
  • Woolsey Scott: Founder of the Praetor Lupus.
  • Camille Belcourt: the leader of the New York vampire clan; currently in hiding because she has a price on her head for killing Shadowhunters; one of Magnus' former lovers
  • Brother Zachariah: A Silent Brother who seems to have retained some personality from his past life as a Shadowhunter. Not as silent as Brother Jeremiah.
  • Raphael Santiago: vampire who currently leads the Manhatten vampire clan, wants Simon to be his bodyguard
  • Kaelie: fairy waitress at Taki's
  • Sister Cleophas: one of the Iron Sisters at the Adamant Citadel
  • Sister Dolores: one of the Iron Sisters at the Adamant Citadel
  • Ithuriel: An angel that was summoned and imprisoned by Valentine for many years in his basement.
  • Azazel: A greater demon; lieutenant of Hell and Forger of Weapons;
  • Nick: Jordan's roommate at the Praetor Lupus headquarters; currrently on assignment in NY
  • Maureen Brown: rogue vampire in NY; created by Simon; currently Nick's assignment
  • Mirek: the dark magician that Sebastian bargains with to obtain some adamas
  • Sister Magdelena: one of the Iron Sisters; disgraced by her part in the Uprising because she armed the Circle; in it with "Sebastian."
  • Sebastian Verlac: A boy that was killed by Johnathan Christopher Morgenstern, who then stole his identity as a cousin of the Lightwoods.
  • Sebastian: the alias of Jonathan Morgenstern, Valentine's son and Clary's brother.
  • Brother Enoch: one of the Silent Brothers; summoned to the Institute by Maryse Lightwood

  • Downworlder: Part-human, part-demon. Examples include vampires, werewolves, fairies, warlocks and shapeshifters.
  • Downworld: Secret world inhabited by Downworlders.
  • Mundane 'Mundie': One who does not have anything to do with the Shadow World. A human.
  • Stele: Is the instrument used by Shadowhunters to draw Runes. Described as a slender twig made of whitish-silver material, apparently flexible.
  • Runes: The marks Shadowhunters use in order to enhance their abilities.
  • Parabatai: It means a pair of warriors who fight together--who are closer than brothers.
  • Iratze: A healing rune
  • Glamour: Used by Shadowhunters and Downworlders to conceal their activities from Mundanes. Works like a hologram.
