It's the kind of book that really can make a person think, but can be a plain source of entertainment as well. I'm obsessed.” see full review » see other reviews » |

He begins his novel with rich intricate language that both compels and frightens. It takes you by the collar and drags you into a world real at once uncomfortable and surreal the next, dark and alluring.
Then he drops you into suburban banality with its creature comforts. The coming of age portion of the novel weaves a magnetic web of authenticity peppered with the occasional hint of something else. As the tale progresses, the language builds in complexity to reflect the increasing maturity and life experience of the protagonist, Douglas. As his life spirals downward, Paco leads you through the gutter with him until you are wondering how such an intelligent soul could reach such depths. It is the secondary characters of Jack and Jefferson that provide the mentorship and allure of this actuality Dougals is discovering. How could realty be otherwise? Mr. Alghren intwines the theories of Quantum Physics and Tao seamlessly to enforce the storyline, propelling it into a realism so inevitable a sliver of ice slides down the backbone.”
