The Velvet Room
By Zilpha Keatley Snyder
1937 California: When the Williams family lose their house they are forced into living in their old Model T until one day it hits a rock and the tire goes flat (again.) When they look for help they run into a man named Mr. Mcurdy who offers Mr. Williams a job. He takes it and the family moves in to their new cabin. One day when Robin (main character and daughter of Mr. Williams) “wanders off” she runs into an old woman named Bridget. They become friends and Bridget eventually gives her a key that leads to the Mcurdys old house ‘las Palmeras.’ In the house she finds a room that she names the velvet room. The velvet room becomes a place for her to get away and think about things when need be. Things were going great until one day a letter comes in the mail from Robin’s uncle asking them to come and run the store he owns. They were about to leave when Mr. Mcurdy offers Mr. Williams a job as grounds keeper for las Palmeras, he excepts and they start living there.

I personally liked the book. I liked that even when it started to get slow there was another surprise to draw you back in. As I said before though, it did get a little slow sometimes because it started getting repetitive. Robin started doing the same thing over and over again. I would recommend this book because it has mystery, drama, and it was very exciting.
