Below the streets of New York, in the tunnels of abandoned subways, are new settlements connected to each other by railways, which were constructed before the enclaves were built. Lurking around in the dark tunnels are half-blind, disfigured, once-human beasts, called Freaks. They are always hungry, always searching for their meal, and although the people living the enclaves believe they’re just stupid, diseased monsters, the Freaks are becoming smarter. They are organizing and strategizing, and it’s only a matter of time before they find a way into Deuce’s home. Deuce and her hunting partner, Fade, soon realize the Freaks’ growing intelligence when they barely escape an attack as they explore the underground passages around their enclave. They try to explain their findings to the elders, but, as the leaders of their home do not want to come to terms with the fact that they all could be in danger, Deuce and Fade are cast aside. They both come to the understanding that the people that are supposed to keep them safe—the elders—have been lying to them about nearly everything they have learned about the world around them. They are exiled and sent out into the threatening darkness of the tunnels to fend for themselves. Fade understands that, to survive, they must escape the underground and find a way to a place that Deuce calls “Topside.” Little do they know that the Freaks—and even greater dangers—await them above in a strange world where water falls from the sky and the ruins of another civilization lay broken and motionless, lost in time.
