Robin Hobb weaves a complex plot through this Soldier Son series. Along the way, especially in this last book, she raises such questions as free will vs. determinism, what is the essence of identity or is there really such a thing? given the "butterfly" or "ripple" effect can we truly act...

This book was a big disappointment for me. I've read everything Hobb has written so far (and some of the books she wrote under her other pseudonym, Megan Lindholm). Her first big series, consisting of 3 connected trilogies, is one of the best fantasies I've ever read, and probably the single...

5 out of 5. The last of the Soldier's Son Trilogy, absolutely fantabulous. Nevare finally (finally!) figures a possible way out of his epic nightmare. This series is a must-read ... but not for the faint of heart ... you'll have to read the entire trilogy to get the full satisfaction of a series well-written. Well worth it (especially after the darkness of the 2nd in the series).

Hobb does a wonderful job of tying up the story and makes the long journey worthwhile.

I enjoyed the book but sometimes I felt like it dragged on. I had trouble getting through the middle but once it reached a certain point it was hard to put down.

Although I cannot say that I was a fan of the first two books, the last one in the trilogy makes up for what the first two lacked. Robin Hobb is trully a brilliant writer. She knows how to make the reader experience what her character is experiencing and she makes the subtle moves from one way of thinking to another obvious, and yet subtle enough for the reader to be startled and at the same time enchanted by it.

I have loved the other Robin Hobb Trilogy but I felt I slogged my way through this one. I almost skimmed the last hundred pages to get through it. Somehow it just was not as compeling as her other sagas. Glad I got it from the library and didn't buy it.

Best of this series (I think these get better as they go along).

This trilogy forces you to look at the other side of the conflict. By the end, I could not identify the enemy.

I enjoyed the final book of the Soldier Son Trilogy. It had some interesting twists and turns along the way. Hobb drew the story to an end that pleased me, but one that I really didn't expect.

A lot of potential, but Hobb forgot to put her soul into this adventure.
1,5 book long I got some of the feel of the Farseer Trilogy again, (which is the best fantasy trilogy out there IMO), a character faced with adversity in a difficult time of his life and in a very interesting world. What Hobb forgot is to put elements of light in the dark tunnel of adversity and with 900 pages to go, that becomes tedious and frankly quite annoying.

Out of respect for Hobbs previous work, I 'soldiered on'. Sadly the story lacks momentum from this point on, the solution to the plot, obvious, gets delayed to frustration. The ending left me baffled, wondering why 890 pages of struggle become unraveled in 10 pages of quickly tying all the knots. In short: Not her best work.
