• Alice Piper: We watch Alice grow from a precocious child to a young adult. She is a genius, fearless, and constantly challenging herself physically and intellectually, balking against the limitation of the adults around her who love her, admire her, appreciate her, but also fear for her. Ethereal, lovely, and strong, Alice is unsatisfied with conquering her own world and from her earliest childhood creates new worlds more to her liking.
• Dale Haytes: The bovine, meaty, mean-spirited son of the local dairy king, Dale has grown up entitled, spoiled, and powerful.
• Gene Piper: Gentle, idealistic, and altruistic, Gene has trained as a doctor but chooses to live off the grid in rural upstate NY where he hopes to rally the country people to protect the land, live sustainably, defend themselves against powerful industrialists, and protect the earth. He loves his wife and daughter deeply, is a loyal friend, and lives his principles.
• Wendy White: We see Wendy grow up, too, from being a sweet chubby girl in a happy family to becoming an athletic, beautiful young woman. Unlike Alice, Wendy is of the small town she lives in, part of its politics and petty web of relationships. She is neither as confident nor as ambitious as Alice, though it is clear she has the strength, intelligence, and interests to carry her well beyond her confining domain if she could only overcome her limited aspirations.
