  • Indevan ("Inda): Hero of the series. He is the second son of one of the royal families. His traditional role as the second son is to become his elder brother's bodyguard and defensive commander, a position known as the Randael. At the Royal Academy, he displays a natural talent for leadership and war strategy. He inspires loyalty and respect.
  • Evred-Laef Montrei-Vayir ("Sponge"): He is the brother to royal heir, Aldren-Sierlaef. As a second son, he is also expected to become his brother's protector and home defense commander, or "Shield Arm" / Randael. However, he is more inclined toward intellectual learning rather than physical fighting; as such, he is a disappointment to his father, the high king.
  • Hadand: A shy and very timid girl who is betrothed to the Sierlaef, the high prince. Although she will be the future queen, she fears her fiance.
  • Aldren: Older brother of Evred. The Sierlaef, or royal heir. A bully who is under the influence of his uncle. He has a speech impediment and learning disabilities, but excels at physical fighting. Betrothed to Hadand.
