This is both my first Egyptian novel, and my first Wilbur Smith novel. I was impressed on both counts. Taita makes for a fascinating character, and I couldn't help but love being in his POV. He's tremendously talented and severely lacking in humility, and that makes for a wonderful combination. The love story between Lostris and Tanus is absolutely believable, and the scope of the novel is epic.

I'd recommend this novel to most, though there is a fair amount of gore, though not any more than you see in a love of HF novels. I took exception with some of the more overt sexual scenes, but even here Smith pulled his punches where a lot of authors would have gone full tilt and driven me from the novel.

As far as historical accuracy, Smith took a lot of license. I would normally take exception to this, but since my focus is on Medieval history, I couldn't readily pick out the details he had altered. In the end, read it for the story and the exotic world of ancient Egypt. It's a treat.
