This story is about Leigh Botts, a young boy who lives with his divorced mother and has a dream of becoming an author like Boyd Henshaw. He wrote to the author in second grade informing him that he liked his book, but he never imagined writing to that same man, Mr. Henshaw, again. At school, he gets bullied a lot, for example, the fantastic treats in his lunchbox (made by Katy, his mother's employer) start mysteriously disappearing... His loneliness and the feeling of not having his parents together, make him grumpy and forlorn.
