Following her parents' death, Quincie Morris was left in her Uncle Davidson's care, and the fate of the family's Italian restaurant was left in hers. Now 17, Quincie, who narrates, and her uncle have renamed the place Sanguini's. They've remodeled it with a "vampire theme," which they believe will sell in their Texas college town since "vampires are a fringe population, and Austin is a tolerant place."

A month before the grand re-opening, however, the longtime chef is mauled to death in the kitchen, and the murder suspect is a werewolf. Quincie finds this problematic, since her lifelong best friend and love interest, Kieren, is a "hybrid werewolf" who traces his lupine heritage to the wolves that roamed Ireland with St. Patrick. A new chef shows up who may be talented but is also spooky, with red contact lenses, pale hair and a menu featuring sweetbreads, blood sausage and baby squirrels in honey cream sauce.

Quotes edit see section history

  • “Enough! Can it, Clyde. It's Quince, got it? She's still Quincie.”
    Kieren Morales
  • “Nice to meet you, but maybe dial it down a notch or three. You're suppose to be a vampire chef, not vampire royalty.”
    Quincie P. Morris
  • “Upbeat undead Hippie workaholic Seeks hemoglobin”
    Mitch
  • “Kieren’s the smartest fur-face I know”
    Clyde
  • “You and Travis? You’re human, right?” “You got a problem with that? “Me? Hell, no. But it is unusual.” “Travis and I were paintball buddies. Besides, who’re you to talk? A vampire smitten with a Wolf.” “Is there anything you didn’t tell her?”
    Quincie and Aimee
  • “What? You thought only your and Kieren’s forbidden, unspoken, mutual yearning had been special enough for him to confide his true self?”
    Aimee
  • “At least Aimee isn’t a damed and depraved hellion.” “Just wait. Once the baby-squirrel eaters turn toothy, everybody’ll be romancing the dead.” “What baby-squirrel eaters?”
    Clyde, Quince, and Aimee
  • “What happened?” “I heal fast.” “A werewolf slugged him.” “And?” “Let’s just say you shouldn’t quiz a lone Wolf about vampirism if you haven’t made up a really outstanding lie to explain why you need that information. Mr. Accommdating wasn’t impressed with ‘uh’ for an answer.”
    Quincie, Clyde, Aimee
  • “Any leads at the library? “Yes and no. There was the usual victim blaming. Apparently, sinners, alcoholics, suicides, witches, sorcerers, seventh children, highwaymen, plague victims, and the unpopular are more likely to rise undead.”
    Quincie and Aimee
  • “I still think we should hire a wizard.” “You got a copy of the Hogwarts alumni directory?”
    Clyde and Aimee
  • “Don‘t you think he‘s too charismatic and too good-looking?” “Lamb chop, Clark Gable was charismatic. Montgomery Clift was good-looking. We could auction off tickets to see this boy.”
    Quincie and Sergio
  • “I’m not hunting you. I’m here to help save your soul.” “And the vampire you torched, was he an atheist?”
    Zachary and Quincie
  • “You never talk about him.” “Neither do you.” “I’m a guy. It’s different.” “What’s your point? You think I’m deficient because I haven’t gone catatonic?” “Catatonic? Try panting. Wasn’t that you trailing after that Zachary guy last night?” “I do not pant. For you information, Zachary’s in training. He needed my help.” “Sure he did.”
    Clyde and Quincie
  • “Your father was an archaeologist?” “An academic. Not so much with the whip and fedora.”
    Nora and Quincie
  • “Home of Schaf College? Who’s Schaf?” “It means ‘sheep’ in German. So the translation would be ‘Sheep College.’” “A Wolf college in sheep’s clothing?” “We’re on our third woolly mascot since I got here.”
    Quincie and Kieren
  • “We don’t take American Express.”
    Gabriella
  • “Exactly how many older men are you traveling with these days?” “Just the three”
    Kieren and Quincie
  • “You used to have business strategies, not battle strategies.” “I don’t mean to-” “Please don’t stop on my account. It’s very sexy. Very animal as the Wolves would say.”
    Kieren and Quincie
  • “On a scale of one to five, one being a picnic basket of bunnies and cream puffs and five being ‘holy crap,’ how’re doing?”
    Quincie
