• Hal Courtney/ The Barracuda: This story is Hal's.His growing up from a brave lad to a fearless commander of the ocean.
• Francis Courteney: Hal's father. A nautitioner Knight. A brave and gallant captain.
• Cornelius Schreuder: The most fearsome sword-welder in the service of the Dutch East India Company. He loses his honor as the story progresses and becomes rouge-like.It is him that Hal must finally defeat to achieve his destiny.
• Big Daniel: Add a description of this character.
• Lord Cumbrae/the Buzzard: The embodiment of all deception and trickery. A fellow knight of Francis Courtney
• Christopher Llewellyn: Llewellyn is the captain of the Golden Bough ship, and is a privateer, like the Courtney family.
• Sukeena: Sukeena is a main character after she is encountered by Hal Courtney. She is from one of the islands upon which the characters arrive.
• Sam Bowles: A most interesting character. Although Cumbrae is the main antagonist in the story, it is Bowles who's easily the most loathsome. Even in his death, he befalls a terrible harm to the Courtney family.
• Katinka van de Velde: Katinka is one of the primary characters, nearer to the beginning of the novel.
• Ned Tyler
• Aboli: Aboli is of African descent, and is considered one of the slaves aboard the Courtney ship. Despite this he is one of Hal's closest allies, and is responsible for training him in many different ways.
• Slow John: Slow Jan is also known as Stadige Jan in Dutch, and is the primary executioner on one of the islands. He is described as an outcast, though he has a love for flowers as well.
